Madison Square Garden is about to get a bit more playground.
According to a report by Shams Charania of The Vertical on Monday, the New York Knicks are finalizing a multi-year deal with guard Tony Wroten.
Wroten, still just 22 years old, averaged 16.9 points per game, 2.9 rebounds per game, and 5.2 assists per game for the Sixers in the 2014-15 season. But he tore the ACL in his right knee in January 2015 and has struggled to return to form since. Wroten was officially waived by Philadelphia last December.
While woefully inefficient at times, Wroten brings an exciting “streetball” style of play to the table. He attacks the basket like a piranha and is able to get penetration easily with his blistering first step and excellent handle.
Wroten does have noticeable warts in his game: he is a career 23.1 percent shooter from deep, produces turnovers like a bakery, and doesn’t bring much on the defensive end other than reckless gambling for steals. But for a Knicks team that is relying heavily on the aged Jose Calderon and the ball-stopping Arron Afflalo in the backcourt, he could be a nice addition.
Knicks fans, if you’re looking for a healthy dose of no-look passes, corkscrew finishes at the rim, and Vine-able ankle breakers to your heart’s content, it’s safe to say that you’ve found your guy.
