Report: Kyrie Irving giving no indication he will leave Boston

Kyrie Irving

The Boston Celtics seem to believe that Kyrie Irving will stick to his word that he will remain with the team longterm.

Irving, who can opt out of his contract and become a free agent after the season, said before the year that he planned to re-sign with the Celtics. That hasn’t stopped fans of several teams from trying to recruit him, nor has it quieted the rumors.

Brooklyn Nets fans have chanted for Irving, believing they might be able to sign him. Knicks fans are feeling the same way thanks to their cap space. There was even a report saying Irving wanted to reunite with LeBron James.

The Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach wrote on Thursday that Irving has given no indication that he will back down from his word to re-sign with the team. Himmelsbach also says that if Irving does change his mind, he was told the thought of Irving reuniting with LeBron is a “joke.”

This season has not gone smoothly for Boston as they are still trying to get Gordon Hayward back up to speed and are trying to make things work for Irving. But with the Knicks getting rid of Kristaps Porzingis, the path to the NBA Finals seems to remain easiest in the East. Boston seems to have a good position in the chase, which is something Irving should recognize.
