Magic Johnson has spent years blasting the Los Angeles Lakers and their decision making as an organization, and he can now officially take matters into his own hands with his former team.
The Lakers announced on Thursday that they have hired Johnson to assist team president and part-owner Jeanie Buss with all areas of basketball in addition to business advising. Buss said the team is “thrilled and honored to add Magic’s expertise and abilities.” Johnson also expressed his excitement in a press release.
“Everyone knows my love for the Lakers. Over the years, I have considered other management opportunities, however my devotion to the game and Los Angeles make the Lakers my first and only choice,” he said. “I will do everything in my power to help return the Lakers to their rightful place among the elite teams of the NBA.”

While Johnson is obviously a Lakers legend, the move comes as a bit of a surprise. In addition to ripping Lakers players in recent years for their lack of effort on the court, Johnson has frequently unloaded on Jim Buss, Jeanie’s brother, for his inability to build a contender. Obviously, that is all considered water under the bridge. The Lakers are desperate to get back to being a title contender, and the Buss family feels Magic can help get them there.
