Anthony Davis may have a little bit of work to do in between now and the start of the new season.
An unflattering photo of the Dallas Mavericks star Davis made the rounds online on Tuesday. The photo, which was part of a set that was posted by the Mavericks on their official X page, showed Davis rocking his new goggles. Davis revealed earlier this week that he will have to wear the goggles for the rest of his NBA career after undergoing surgery this offseason for a detached retina in his right eye.
Take a look.
A maiden glimpse from Vancouver of Anthony Davis’ doctor-mandated protective eyewear that Davis says he must now wear “for the rest of (my) career” after offseason surgery to repair a detached retina.

But most were taken aback by Davis’ physical appearance in the photo. Plenty of X users commented that Davis was looking a little hefty there.

I don’t remember seeing Anthony Davis this heavy. He looks out of shape.

Davis is officially listed at 6-foot-10 and 253 pounds. At 32 years old, he is about to enter his 14th NBA season after appearing in only 51 total games last year due to injury.
For the 10-time All-Star Davis, that may have been the product of either an unflattering camera angle or a summer in which he wasn’t able to do much after his eye surgery. Davis probably deserves the benefit of the doubt here too since he has never really struggled with weight and conditioning over the course of his NBA career. That being said, questions about what kind of shape Davis is really in will only add another layer of murkiness to Davis’ uncertain status for the start of the 2025-26 campaign.
