The Minnesota Timberwolves were unable to prevent Nickeil Alexander-Walker from walking in free agency.
Alexander-Walker has reportedly signed a four-year, $62 million contract with the Atlanta Hawks. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the deal includes both a trade kicker and a player option on the final year. The Hawks needed a sign-and-trade to make the contract work. Atlanta agreed to send a 2027 second-round pick and cash considerations to land the veteran guard.

Alexander-Walker served as a vital piece off the Timberwolves’ bench during his three-year run with the team. The Virginia Tech alum averaged 8.4 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in Minnesota. He played in every regular season game for the Timberwolves over the last two seasons.
NAW leaving in free agency became a near certainty given the contracts Minnesota handed out last week. The team committed over $200 million to retain the services of big men Naz Reid and Julius Randle. The spending spree left Alexander-Walker as the odd man out among the Timberwolves’ free agents.
The Hawks add Alexander-Walker to a backcourt that includes Trae Young and Dyson Daniels. After acquiring a former All-Star center just last week, Atlanta looks primed to make a run in what’s become a wide-open Eastern Conference.
