Allen Iverson has received more than his share of negative publicity over time, and much of it has been deserved. He was late arriving in Turkey after signing to play there because he missed his flight. He was defiant to police after getting pulled over in his Lamborghini. He was also being used to promote parties when he said he was taking care of his daughter. But just because he’s had problems in the past doesn’t mean everything negative said about him is true.
One of those nasty rumors about Iverson was spread Saturday, when it was said he missed his basketball camp Friday because he was too drunk from partying with strippers.
First off, let’s deal with the facts. Iverson is hosting a basketball camp called Camp Crossover this week in Greensboro. Iverson even tweeted about being at the camp on Thursday. The rumor says Iverson missed camp Friday because he was too drunk from partying with strippers. According to camp director Davon Barton, that is not true.
Barton set the record straight, saying Iverson was at the camp as scheduled. Barton added that Iverson was “active” and “engaged” with the camp.
So how did the story get confused? People twisted the story because the version they wanted to believe was much more juicy.
What happened was a radio host was angry that Allen Iverson missed a scheduled interview on her show. Iverson supposedly texted the show to say he was too tired from being out late the night before. The angry host began tweeting like mad because she was upset. Her tweets got picked up and somehow the words were twisted to make it sound like Iverson skipped the camp, when all he did was skip an interview to promote the camp. The angry host even pointed out that Iverson missed the interview, not the camp.
So what’s the lesson to be learned here? Not everything you read, whether it’s on a website or twitter, is true. Try to look into a story and do some fact checking on your own before you decide if you’re going to believe something.
