Report: Manu Ginobili ‘seriously considering’ retirement
Longtime San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili has been working out with the team this summer and given indications that he plans to return for a 17th NBA season, but that is apparently not a guarantee.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Ginoboli is planning to meet with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich this week and is “seriously considering retirement.” Ginobili has not yet made a decision, and the Spurs are reportedly willing to let him take as much time as he needs.
Ginobili, 41, is under contract for $2.5 million next season and proved that he was still able to produce in 2017-18. He appeared in 65 games and averaged 8.9 points and 2.5 assists while playing just 20.0 minutes per game.
Ginobili is the second-oldest active NBA player right now behind Vince Carter, but he has been an important part of a Spurs franchise that has won multiple championships. We have already seen one billboard urging him to return, and many fans are hoping he decides to play one more season.
