Rich Paul raises questions about LeBron James’ future with Lakers

LeBron James has contractually committed to the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025-26 season, but that does not necessarily mean he is going to finish his career with the team.

James on Sunday exercised his $52.6 million player option for next season. LeBron’s agent Rich Paul also made some comments to Shams Charania of ESPN that raised questions about the four-time champion’s future in L.A.

Paul said James understands that the Lakers need to build for the future but that the 40-year-old wants to contend for another title.

“LeBron wants to compete for a championship. He knows the Lakers are building for the future. He understands that, but he values a realistic chance of winning it all,” Paul said. “We are very appreciative of the partnership that we’ve had for eight years with Jeanie [Buss] and Rob [Pelinka] and consider the Lakers as a critical part of his career.

“We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what’s best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career. He wants to make every season he has left count, and the Lakers understand that, are supportive and want what’s best for him.”

Charania also said on “SportsCenter” Sunday that LeBron is “evaluating how he wants to finish his career.”

The Lakers acquired Luka Doncic in a blockbuster trade in February. They are far more likely to focus on building around him, as he is only 26. While LeBron continued to play at a high level this past season with 24.4 points, 8.2 assists and 7.8 rebounds per game, he will turn 41 in December.

There was some recent talk about tension between LeBron and the team’s front office. Paul’s comments were likely designed to put pressure on the team to make improvements to the roster this summer in order to help keep pace in the Western Conference.

LeBron’s son Bronny was drafted by the Lakers last year. That is one reason James would probably prefer to finish his career in L.A., but Paul wants it to be known that LeBron’s priority is chasing a fifth ring. Time will tell if that could eventually lead to a trade request or James departing as a free agent next year.
