Saturday’s game between the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky brought the fireworks, with Sophie Cunningham and DiJonai Carrington igniting the biggest powder keg.
Carrington was tossed out of the game at United Center in Chicago, Ill., after committing a Flagrant 2 foul on Cunningham. Shortly after her ejection, Carrington took her feelings to social media, writing “WHITE PRIVILEGE” and tagging the Fever’s account on Threads.
Cunningham was trying to finish a layup when Carrington came out of nowhere and smacked the Fever guard in the face. A confrontation between the two later erupted after Cunningham got up, as the refs tried to separate them.
Cunningham said her piece on that heated moment with Carrington following the Fever’s 90-86 win over Chicago.
“Clearly, I think it was like unnecessary. I’ve never really spoken to her and have no beef with her, but I guess she has some pent up stuff. So get your s–t off. That’s fine. I can take it,” Cunningham said, via Kareem Copeland of ESPN.
The former Missouri Tigers star had zero doubts that Carrington deliberately fouled her hard.
“Yeah, it’s intentional. She wasn’t even on the team. She has no reason to be doing any of that. So, good way to get her kicked out,” Cunningham continued.
Cunningham also suggested that Carrington was trying to take advantage of the Fever’s popularity to get attention for herself.
“I don’t even know her. She wasn’t even on the team last year when all that was going on. But I do think when people play the Fever, we’re nationally televised, there’s a lot of eyes on us and people just want attention. And that’s her just trying to get attention,” added Cunningham.
If anything, Carrington and Cunningham just made the next meeting between the Fever and Sky even more interesting, with the teams facing off again on Aug. 23 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill.
