Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham was involved in one of many skirmishes during her team’s game against the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night, and it appears she has gained a bunch of new fans as a result.

There were several heated confrontations involving Caitlin Clark and other players during the Fever’s 88-71 win over the Sun at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. Clark and Sun guard Jacy Sheldon first got into it early in the second quarter and again later in the game when Clark was hit in the face by Sheldon, retaliated and then was shoved to the floor.

Cunningham clearly wanted to show that she had Clark’s back. With less than a minute left in the game, Cunningham dragged Sheldon to the ground on a meaningless fastbreak opportunity. Cunningham, Sheldon and another player were ejected.

Since Tuesday’s game, orders have been flying in for Cunningham’s Fever jersey. The jersey quickly sold out.

Cunningham’s jersey remained sold out as of Thursday afternoon, though Fanatics was directing fans to a page where they could customize a Fever jersey with Cunningham’s name and the No. 8.

Cunningham spent the first six seasons of her WNBA career with the Phoenix Mercury. She was traded to the Fever in a four-team deal in January. Cunningham and Clark have quickly developed a close relationship off the court.

Fans also appreciated the post Cunningham made on social media after she got tangled up with Sheldon.

With a career average of just 7.7 points per game, Cunningham was relatively unknown by many fans prior to Tuesday’s game. She now has one of the hottest-selling jerseys in sports.
