Matthew Dellavedova has made quite a name for himself during this year’s NBA playoffs. Now, it appears, his hometown in Australia is going to show him some love.
Mark Johnson, CEO of Central Goldfield Shire, indicated to 3AW radio in Australia efforts will be made to rename the stadium Dellavedova used to play in after the Cavaliers guard.
“That’s where Matt Dellavedova learned his craft and the Maryborough Basketball Association have suggested that the stadium, which is a two-court stadium, ought to be renamed after Matthew,” Johnson told 3AW Breakfast.
“He’s certainly put Maryborough on the world map, it’s just fantastic.”
Dellavedova has gone from a guy who was known by few outside of Cleveland to one garnering national headlines. He received praise for his defensive work on Stephen Curry during Game 2 of the NBA Finals, followed that up by scoring 20 points in Game 3, and has become an internet sensation in seemingly a blink of an eye.
However, not all of the attention the 24-year-old has received has been positive. Dellavedova has been called a dirty player by some, most recently for trading shots with Draymond Green. He has also gotten three players injured or ejected during the Cavaliers’ playoff run.
From being undrafted out of Saint. Mary’s to a key piece of a championship contender, there’s little wonder why NBA Finals fever is spreading throughout Australia.
