Stan Van Gundy has brutal take on rumors linking Zion Williamson to Knicks
Rumors about Zion Williamson’s unhappiness typically lead to speculation linking him to the New York Knicks. His former coach, however, is sick of hearing it.
Former Pelicans coach Stan Van Gundy bashed the Knicks in an appearance on “The Dan Le Batard Show,” suggesting the franchise is arrogant in its belief that top players are eager to play there.
“It’s possible,” Van Gundy said of Williamson joining the Knicks, via Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News. “But listen. The Knicks have this thing and it’s amazing. No matter how many times people have proven they don’t want to play for the Knicks, the Knicks have this idea that everybody in the league wants to play for New York. Now when is the last time it actually happened that somebody actually came and tried to get their way to New York? Like, never in the last 20 years? But still the Knicks and the Knicks fans think everybody is trying to get to the Knicks.
“I’m not saying (Zion) won’t end up there — there’s all kinds of ways people can end up somewhere — but this idea that everybody wants to be a New York Knick. I mean if that were the case then they wouldn’t be as bad as they’ve been for the last 20 years.”
Much is often made of the Knicks pursuing star players, but they usually don’t land them. Carmelo Anthony represents the last franchise star to play for the organization. Williamson has hinted at having interest in New York, but he is years away from free agency.
The fun part here is Van Gundy piling on the Knicks. Plenty of people probably agree with his sentiments.
