Stephon Marbury expects interest from other Chinese teams after being released

Stephon Marbury’s contract with the Beijing Ducks of the Chinese Basketball Association was terminated, but the point guard wants to continue playing and expects to have interest from other clubs.

Marbury, the former NBA All-Star, had one more year left on his deal with the Ducks, though there was an option for him to coach or play for the franchise. The Ducks thought the 40-year-old was done playing and wanted him to coach, while Marbury wants to play. That led to the two sides ending the contract.

“I am sure all the fans could tell from last season I’m still capable of playing,” Marbury, who averaged over 21 points per game last season, said on Weibo, via the New York Post. “I was still able to lead the team to compete, even with an injured leg. I pulled my hamstring at the beginning of the season, and I still played and put everything on the court because that’s who I am.

“I want to dedicate this last year of my career in the best way possible on the court for the CBA, then I’ll retire and work as a coach to help the basketball here for the rest of my life.”

Marbury gave an interview to The Undefeated which ran on Monday. They say Marbury expects to receive interest from other clubs. The former NBA point guard won three championships for the Ducks and became a legend in Beijing. There is a statue of him outside the team’s arena, and a movie coming out about his life this summer.
