TNT brutally cuts to commercial in middle of Celtics’ banner-raising ceremony
TNT must have some Lakers fans in their control room.
The Boston Celtics officially raised championship banner No. 18 to the rafters on Tuesday night ahead of their season opener against the New York Knicks. Boston’s players also received their 2023-24 championship rings during the ceremony, and several Celtics legends (including Bob Cousy, Cedric Maxwell, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett) were in attendance for the festivities at TD Garden.
But TNT had an absolutely brutal moment at a very crucial point in the ceremony. Right at the moment that the championship banner was in the middle of being raised, TNT decided to [checks notes] cut to commercial.
Here is the hilariously cruel video, in which viewers waiting to see the banner successfully make it to the rafters were instead treated to a Downy laundry detergent commercial.

If you had to pick the worst possible time to cut to commercial during the entire ceremony, that one would probably be it. The only thing missing there was for TNT to start playing the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” theme as well.
Pending the results of their lawsuit against the league, this will be the final season that TNT holds the rights to the NBA. They have already witnessed some noteworthy exits in recent months, and the start of TNT’s last hurrah with the 2024-25 season also appears to have gone as poorly as possible.
