Chris Paul’s stint with the Golden State Warriors may end up being a mere footnote.
Appearing Monday on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back,” Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that the Warriors will take trade calls on the veteran Paul ahead of the Feb. 8 deadline. Charania characterizes the possibility of Golden State trading Paul and other veterans as “open conversations.”
The 38-year-old Paul is currently injured with a left hand fracture (and recently provided a troubling update on the injury). He was averaging 8.9 points and 7.2 assists per game for the Warriors before getting hurt. While that combination does not exactly scream out trade value, Paul does have intrigue as essentially a $30.8 million expiring contract (since his deal is non-guaranteed for 2024-25).
Saddled with an exorbitant luxury tax bill to field a roster that is now 19-24 this season (12th in the Western Conference), Golden State may need a hard reset at this point. That means the first-year Warrior Paul and some other notable veterans are candidates to potentially be offloaded at the deadline.
