Brandon Davies Says He Was Treated Fairly by BYU After Honor Code Violation

When Brandon Davies was suspended for the remainder of last season — including BYU’s run in the NCAA Tournament — many were outraged.  With the way American society is today, suspending someone for simply having sex seems absolutely ludicrous.  Rules are rules.  Students who vow to follow the honor code at BYU know exactly what it consists of, so the school has every right to hold them accountable for their actions.  If you’re like the average college student and abstinence isn’t an option for the four years while you are away, pick a place other than BYU.

Davies, now a junior, spoke about the incident for the first time on Tuesday.  His outlook on the situation may come as a surprise to those who might expect Davies to be bitter toward the school for deciding to end his season early last year.

“(The situation) hurt not just me, but everyone around me,” Davies said according to the Salt Lake Tribune. “It is definitely something I will never forget about, and something I never want to do again. I will use that to drive me in all that I do today.”

More impressively, Davies insisted he was “definitely treated more than fair” by the university and has become a “totally different person” because of it.

The irony of the situation for me is that Davies will probably have to answer more questions from his teammates than the media this season.  If you have a bunch of grown men in a locker room with the same hormones and needs as the rest of us, there is obviously going to be a great deal of curiosity.  Unless the other members of the team have taken Jim McMahon’s advice, Davies has probably already been peppered with, “What’s it like?” questions since the day he returned to the team.
