Matthew Fisher-Davis may be the goat in Vanderbilt’s first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament against Northwestern, but his head coach isn’t about to throw him under the bus.
In a postgame interview with Jamie Erdahl, Drew stuck up for Fisher-Davis.
“First, we’re not even in that position without him,” Drew said of Fisher-Davis. “We’ve talked our whole year with our team that one play or two plays doesn’t define a whole game.

“There could have been a miscommunication after that play with him, but I’m proud of him and how he played the second half. We’re not in that position without him.”

Fisher-Davis had 22 points in the game, which led his team. They wouldn’t have been in position to get the win without his efforts, though his intentional foul with under 20 seconds left cost them their lead (video here).
This error could just help provide more motivation for Fisher-Davis to come back on a mission as a senior next season. It’s nice to know he has the backing of his coach despite no matter what.
