The crowd in Stillwater on Wednesday was not very, well, still.
With the No. 16 BYU Cougars in town to play the Oklahoma State Cowboys at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla., many expected the home team’s fans to be loud, but they seemingly went overboard.
Profane anti-Mormon chants reverberated inside the building with a little over a minute left in the second half, which the broadcast also picked up. You hear it from the video here.
The Cougars ended up losing to Oklahoma State to the tune of a 99-92 score, but it was perhaps not the night’s most concerning issue for BYU head coach Kevin Young.
“There were some ‘F The Mormons’ chants tonight by the student section that I heard,” Young said during the postgame press conference, via ESPN. “It was a great win for Oklahoma State University. I think their fans should be proud, but it would be great if some class was warranted.
“I got four small kids at home, I’m a Mormon, and when I go home, they’re gonna ask me about it, the same way they asked me about it last year at Arizona,” Young continued.
As implied by Young’s statement, it was not the first time that his team was treated in such an ugly manner in enemy territory. It was the same case during a 2025 road game against the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, Ariz., which resulted in an apology from Arizona.
The Cougars will return to action on Saturday for a game against the No. 8 Houston Cougars in a much less hostile location at Marriott Center in Provo, Utah.
