Michigan State gets screwed by selection committee

Tom Izzo

The NCAA Tournament brackets were revealed on Sunday, minutes after Michigan State had beaten Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament championship game. Despite the outcome of the game, the Spartans seemed to get shafted.

Considered by some to be a potential No. 1 seed if they won their conference tournament, Michigan State instead got stuck as the 2 seed in the same bracket as Duke.

Keep in mind that Michigan State entered the final week as the No. 6 team in the AP poll and the No. 7 team in the Coaches Poll. It makes you wonder how after winning the conference tournament they would actually get stuck with such a tough region.

Tennessee seemed to get a better draw as the No. 2 team in the South Region. They get Colgate in the first round and are in the same bracket as Virginia, which last year became the first team in history to lose to a 16 in the tournament. By contrast, the 28-6 Spartans are stuck in the same bracket as the top overall seed in the tournament. The message seems to be that Tennessee’s 20-point loss in the SEC Tournament final to Auburn and MSU’s win over Michigan didn’t really matter.
