The Michigan Wolverines have reportedly found an experienced coach to assist Juwan Howard in his first year at the helm.

According to Brendan Quinn of The Athletic, former St. Joseph’s coach Phil Martelli has accepted a position on Howard’s coaching staff. Longtime NBA point guard and current Knicks assistant Howard Eisley is also expected to join Michigan’s staff.

Sources: Former Saint Joseph’s head coach Phil Martelli has been formally offered and accepted an assistant coaching position on Juwan Howard’s staff at Michigan.

Martelli, 64, won 444 games in 24 seasons at St. Joe’s, reaching 7 NCAA Tournaments.

Additionally, per sources, Michigan and Knicks assistant Howard Eisley are expected to complete a deal within the next 24 hours. He will finalize Juwan Howard’s coaching staff, joining Martelli and Saddi Washington.

Reports indicated that Martelli had been offered the position last week.

For Martelli, it means his absence from the coaching ranks after being fired by St. Joseph’s will be brief. Martelli had coached there since 1995, and was named Naismith and AP Coach of the Year in 2004. He should provide valuable counsel for Howard, who is embarking on his first head coaching job at any level.
