One program’s discarded coach could be another’s desirable hire. Such is the case with Arkansas and Steve Alford.
Stadium’s Jeff Goodman reported on Tuesday that Alford is a candidate for the Arkansas Razorbacks basketball job.
Arkansas is looking for a new coach after firing Mike Anderson, who was 169-102 over eight seasons on the job. Anderson led the Hogs to three NCAA Tournament appearances, but after an 18-16 season, he was let go.
Alford might be a slight upgrade but probably would not be much better. He went 124-63 at UCLA and was fired after beginning the season 7-6.
Though they haven’t made much noise this century, Arkansas has a strong basketball tradition. They were highly successful during a 20-year period from around 1975-1995 under Eddie Sutton and then Nolan Richardson. They reached back-to-back championship games under Richardson, winning one national title. Winning at a high level at Arkansas can be achieved.
