Report: Baylor targeting Justin Fuente to fill head coach vacancy

Justin Fuente

The Baylor Bears lost Matt Rhule to the Carolina Panthers and are in need of a new head football coach. They may have a top candidate in mind as a replacement.

Baylor is targeting current Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente for their vacancy, according to a report from Yahoo’s Pete Thamel. Thamel says Fuente is considered the leading candidate for the job and is planning an interview within the next day.

Fuente, 43, has been the head coach at Virginia Tech the last four seasons. He is 33-20 in four seasons leading the Hokies and went 8-5 this season. Fuente previously coached at Memphis and went 26-23 over four seasons. The team went 10-3 and 9-3 in his final two seasons leading the Tigers.

Baylor was a job many wouldn’t have wanted to touch following the Art Briles scandal, but Rhule took over and built the team back up. They reached the Big 12 championship game this season and went 11-3.
