Everyone said the same thing about the Bill Belichick exit rumors

Rumors began to circulate Wednesday suggesting Bill Belichick’s exit from North Carolina might be imminent.

College football writer Ollie Connolly sparked the rumors Wednesday by reporting that Belichick has discussed buyout options with North Carolina, and could leave for $1 million if he can find a “soft landing” in another coaching job or a media position. Accusations of recruiting violations have circulated over the past day, which could be used to negotiate a cheaper buyout.

Andrew Jones of 247Sports reported that there have been preliminary discussions about a “potential exit strategy” for Belichick. Pete Nakos of On3 reported that a midseason coaching change is unlikely, but described the situation as “fluid.”

Whether Belichick is on the hot seat or not, there is a growing consensus that school leadership at North Carolina regrets the hire and would at least consider taking an out if one is provided to them. That prompted a lot of comments about how predictable Belichick’s lack of success should have been.

Bill Belichick was never going to work at UNC. Never made sense to hire him never & will never make sense why they hired him. Running an NFL operation at the CFB level with hardly any NFL talent doesn’t work.

Players just wasted an entire season of eligibility for this.

Who could have seen this coming? NFL and adults struggled to click with Belichick at times, let alone 18-23 year olds.

Notice I didn’t say 18-24 year olds. Seems 24 and above connect with him. Some connect A LOT… https://t.co/hfN4ttxkjW pic.twitter.com/MSUqv4BRvm

North Carolina’s blowout home loss to Clemson last Saturday seems to have been something of a breaking point. Even if Belichick stays, staff changes appear to be imminent. It does not help that Belichick appears more interested in settling old scores with the New England Patriots than he cares about the dire straits of his current program.

The Tar Heels face Cal on Saturday. They enter the game at 2-3, but they have yet to beat any Power 4 opposition this season.
