Former Notre Dame and LSU coach Brian Kelly is being strongly linked to one potential head coach opening.
Bruce Feldman of The Athletic suggested Kelly could be a good fit at Rutgers if and when that job becomes available. The job is currently held by Greg Schiano, but he is firmly on the hot seat after an 0-2 start and losses to UMass and Boston College.
Kelly is “very motivated” to get back into coaching, and does have some ties to the school. Rutgers president Bill Tate and athletic director Keli Zinn both worked with Kelly at LSU, and the Boston native would be comfortable working in the Northeast.
At the moment, Kelly is working as a CBS Sports analyst. However, he has made no secret of his desire to return to the sidelines, and has expressed how much he misses coaching.
While Kelly has been criticized for perceived underachievement and rocky relationships with players, he has a 297-109-2 lifetime record. Rutgers would not likely find another coach as accomplished as he is if they did choose to move on from Schiano.
