Deionte Thompson roughing the passer penalty burns Alabama

A roughing the passer penalty committed by Deionte Thompson in the national championship game on Monday came back to bite Alabama in the rear.

Alabama was looking to make a goal-line stand and hold Georgia to a field goal just before halftime, and they were potentially a play away from doing so. Georgia had thrown an incomplete pass on 2nd-and-goal at the two, but Thompson was flagged for roughing the passer after shoving Jake Fromm well after he delivered the ball.

The dumb penalty gave Georgia a fresh set of downs at the 1, and they converted a touchdown on the next play.

Thanks to the TD aided by the penalty, the Bulldogs went into halftime up 13-0 on the Crimson Tide.
