An improbable win was not enough to salvage Billy Napier’s reputation among Florida fans.
On Saturday, Florida was on the brink of its fifth loss in six games against Mississippi State in front of a disgruntled crowd at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. The Gators held a precarious 23-21 lead with the Bulldogs in field goal range.
The game was flipped over its head with under 30 seconds left when Florida defensive lineman Michai Boireau intercepted a pass from Mississippi State quarterback Ben Shapen. The Gators held on for the two-point win.

Despite stealing victory from the jaws of defeat, fans buried Napier in boos as he walked off the field.

When asked about the boos after the game, Napier tried to maintain an air of confidence. But the veteran coach sounded somber throughout a press conference that included several questions about his future at Florida.
“I’m built for it, I’m made for it,” Napier said.
Napier added that criticism comes with the territory in leadership roles.

Fans sounded like they were done with Napier even before kickoff. Chants of “Fire Billy” rained throughout the stadium during various points of the game, even up until seconds before Florida’s game-winning interception.

Florida had high expectations coming into the season. The Gators were ranked No. 15 in the preseason AP Top 25 poll. They were off the list entirely just a couple of weeks into the college football season.
Things don’t get any easier for Napier, with a matchup against No. 9 Georgia looming.
