Baylor is doing its best to prevent the football program from a total collapse. That’s why they announced the hiring of interim head coach Jim Grobe so quickly after Art Briles stepped down in the wake of the sexual assault scandal.
One of Grobe’s immediate goals is to try keeping the program’s top-20 recruiting class together at a time when many want to leave. The former Wake Forest head coach spoke Friday about his desire to keep the recruiting class intact.
Grobe on releasing signees: "I don't want parents/kids to hurry up and make decision. I want everyone to calm down and think things through"

Grobe’s comments come at a time when Baylor signees complained that the school was not letting them out of their National Letters of Intent. At least seven signees requested to be released from their letters of intent so that they can start fresh at a different school without the controversy, sexual assault environment, and possibility of NCAA penalties hanging over their heads. It’s a very understandable wish for these student-athletes — one articulated well in this note — but Baylor does not seem amenable to acquiescing at the moment.
Grobe certainly deserves a chance to communicate to these incoming freshmen, but at the same time, the school should be respectful of the student-athletes and not try to trap them.
