The Baylor Bears football program is starting to see serious effects amid the fallout from the scandal surrounding the program.
In addition to head coach Art Briles and athletic director Ian McCaw losing their jobs, seven recruits who had signed letters of intent to play football for the school have requested their release.
According to ESPN, recruits Patrick Hudson, J.P. Urquidez, Jared Atkinson, Kameron Martin, Parrish Cobb and Donovan Duvernay have already requested their releases from their letters of intent. Another top recruit in the class also has plans to do so.
Many of the players’ families say the student-athletes where unaware of the allegations or investigation during their recruitment and do not want the young men going to a school that has the reputation of failing to investigate sexual assault/rape accusations.
From 2009-2016, Baylor failed to adequately respond to at least six sexual assault allegations, and in one case discouraged a victim. Two football players were convicted of rape during that time.
The student-athletes were set to enroll at Baylor on Monday but did not so as they are hoping to be released from their letters of intent so they can begin their college careers elsewhere.
