Mike Leach signs extension to remain at Washington State
Mike Leach has once again been a hot name among head coaching rumors as the college football season nears its conclusion, but he will not be going anywhere in 2020.
Washington State announced on Thursday that Leach has signed an extension with the school that runs through the 2024 season. The coach will make $4 million per season.
“Mike Leach has established, and continued, a culture of success at Washington State, both academically and athletically, that few have matched,” WSU Director of Athletics Pat Chun said in a statement. “He has returned WSU to national prominence, is one of the top football coaches in the nation, and we are fortunate to have him leading our program.”
Leach is the first coach in Washington State history to lead the team to five straight bowl games. He reportedly met with Arkansas about their head coaching vacancy, so it’s possible he was parlaying the Razorbacks’ interest into an extension from Washington State.
This is not the first time Leach has been linked to a high-profile SEC job. He also interviewed with Tennessee before they hired Jeremy Pruitt. He has also expressed frustration in the talent gap between Washington and Washington State, but obviously he is happy enough with his current situation.
