Northwestern flies ‘W’ flags over football stadium in support of Cubs
The NLCS gets underway on Saturday with the Cubs looking to advance to the World Series for the first time since 1945. The Mets are seeking their first trip since 2000. Around both cities, excitement is understandably high. In Illinois, Northwestern University showed its support during the school’s football game against Iowa.
High above Ryan Field, two “W” flags could be seen waving in the breeze on Saturday. The “W” flag is raised at Wrigley Field after a Cubs victory, and has been since the 1940s, while “Fly the W” has come has become a popular catch phrase and battle cry.
The Mets host the first two games of the NLCS, with Game 2 Sunday evening. The next opportunity for the iconic flag to be raised at Wrigley will be next Tuesday, when the series shifts to Chicago for games 3, 4, and 5 (if necessary).
