An Ole Miss football player was shot and killed over the weekend in what police have determined was a homicide.

The Ole Miss football team announced on Sunday that freshman edge rusher Corey Adams has died at age 18.

“We are devastated to learn that Corey Adams, a freshman on the team, passed away last night in Cordova, Tennessee. While our program is trying to cope with this tragic loss, our thoughts are with his loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. Out of respect for his family, we will not be commenting further at this time. We ask the Ole Miss community to keep Corey in their thoughts and respect the privacy of everyone involved.”

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office announced on Saturday night that detectives were investigating a shooting that took place at 10:14 p.m. outside a residence in Cordova, Tenn. Adams, who was from New Orleans, was later identified as the victim.

Police said Adams was pronounced dead at the scene after first responders attempted life-saving measures. Four other men were shot and transported to a local hospital with non-critical injuries.

SCSO detectives have identified the victim in last night’s homicide as 18-year-old Corey Adams of New Orleans, Louisiana. This investigation is ongoing.

The investigation remains ongoing, according to authorities.

Adams, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end from Edna Karr High School in New Orleans, La., was rated by Rivals as a 3-star prospect in the Class of 2025. He chose Ole Miss over Oregon, TCU, USC and other top programs.

Adams is unfortunately not the only college football player to die in a shooting this year.
