Ron Zook may have Illinois 6-0 on the season, but that doesn’t mean he’s not the same Ron Zook we love to mock.
After Illinois scored a touchdown to go up 20-13 Saturday in the second quarter against Indiana, Zook elected to go for two. A simple extra point would have put his team up by eight, forcing Indiana to make a two-point conversion to tie the game. It was a curious call, and the attempt failed. It wouldn’t matter because Illinois went on to win 41-20, but Zook’s explanation for attempting two was classic.
“We were down five, right? Up five, I mean,” he said after the game. “It was 20-13? Up seven?
“Maybe I didn’t know what the score was,” Zook said. “That’s happened to me before. It’s usually when we’re behind. [This will] give you something to pound us about.”
Classic Ron Zook. Les Miles’ clock management problems thinks a coach not knowing the score of the game is bad. He may have had a good sense of humor about it, but that’s no laughing matter. If anyone would have their head in the game, you’d hope it would be the head coach. Hopefully the Zooker learns from this mistake. Yikes!
