The Texas Longhorns are poised to open their season with sophomore quarterback Sam Ehlinger under center.
Coach Tom Herman said Monday that, barring something unexpected, Ehlinger would start Texas’s season opener against Maryland after a lengthy quarterback competition with Shane Buechele.
Texas football coach Tom Herman said Sam Ehlinger took the bulk of first- team reps on Monday and will likely start against Maryland unless something catastrophic happens.

Ehlinger and Buechele spent much of 2017 trading reps to the point that they didn’t have a clear front-runner by bowl season. Ehlinger threw for 1,915 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in nine games last season, and Texas has been impressed with his progress as a passer during their offseason work.
