UCLA top WR Theo Howard redshirts senior year, will enter transfer portal
The UCLA Bruins’ football program has posted terrible results under new head coach Chip Kelly, and what’s worse is that now the program is losing one of its best receivers.
Theo Howard, who was the team’s leading wide receiver last year, announced in a statement on Thursday that he will redshirt this season and enter the transfer portal.

Howard had 56 catches for 594 yards and four touchdowns as a sophomore in 2017, which was the year Jim Mora was fired. Howard played last season under Kelly and had 51 catches for 677 yards and four touchdowns — more than any other wide receiver on the team. He has played in just one game this season and did not have a catch. He dealt with a wrist injury in training camp.
Howard has decided he would rather sit out his final year and redshirt to transfer elsewhere and play as a senior. Him making that decision is a concerning sign about Kelly’s ability to retain and utilize his talented players.
