Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he has followed all protocols as he awaits an investigation into his conduct over his handling of an assistant coach.

Meyer said he has taken note of his portrayal recently, and admitted he fell short in his answers about former assistant coach Zach Smith at Big Ten Media Day. He added, however, that he has always followed proper protocols on reporting issues such as Smith’s, and he did so in 2015 as well.

Meyer’s admission that he knew about and reported the Smith incident in 2015 is an eyebrow-raiser. Questions will be asked why he did not fire Smith then if he knew about it, and the fact that he followed proper protocol, as he claims, won’t be enough to silence those questions.

Meyer is at a point where he’s facing the fact that his coaching career is in danger. He’s been placed on administrative leave and is being investigated, and there’s some reason to believe he may lose his job if it is found that he lied about his knowledge of Smith’s actions. This is his attempt to tell his side of the story.
