Will Grier says he took over-the-counter supplement, will appeal
Florida quarterback Will Grier says he tested positive for a banned substance that was in an over-the-counter supplement.
Grier spoke with reporters on Monday shortly after it was announced that he has been suspended for the remainder of the season. The redshirt freshman appeared to be fighting back tears as he explained that he had no idea he took something he shouldn’t have.
“I took an over-the-counter supplement that had something in it,” Grier said, per Gators reporter Jordan McPherson. “I did not check with the medical staff. I really hope that people can learn from this, learn from my mistake. Really sorry to everyone. Just really sorry.”
Florida coach Jim McElwain declined to mention the specific substance that Grier claims he took, noting that he can’t even pronounce it. He also said that the Gators are appealing, as Grier failed an NCAA test, not one with the university.
If Greer is unsuccessful with his appeal, he will be suspended for a full calendar year. That means he will not be cleared for the start of next season, either.
