Bruce Jenner gave an interview to ABC’s Diane Sawyer that aired Friday night in which he described himself as a woman.
The former Olympic star said in the interview that this would be his last one as Bruce now that he is transitioning into his new identity as a woman. Jenner said the pronouns “he” and “him” could be used to describe himself for now. He also said that he has always had the brain and soul of a female despite being born as a male.
“For all intents and purposes, I am a woman. People look at me differently. They see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life, it is part of me — that female side is part of me. I was not genetically born that way … but we still identify as female. And that’s very hard for Bruce Jenner to say. Because why? Because I do not want to disappoint people,” Jenner says in the interview.
The interview confirms the longstanding rumors that he was undergoing operations to transition to becoming a female.
