49ers reuniting with former Pro Bowl defender
After two straight deep playoff runs together, the San Francisco 49ers are going for a third one with a veteran Pro Bowler.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Tuesday that the 49ers are reuniting with safety Tashaun Gipson. The 34-year-old Gipson will be joining San Francisco’s practice squad for the time being.
Gipson, a Pro Bowler back in 2014 with the Cleveland Browns, had been a mainstay in San Francisco over the last two seasons. He started in 39 out of a possible 40 games for the 49ers (regular season and playoffs) from 2022-23. That included the team’s NFC title game run in 2022 and their Super Bowl run in 2023.
But Gipson got suspended by the NFL in the offseason for a PED violation and then went on to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has since served his suspension and is set to be reinstated but was released by the Jaguars earlier this week without playing in a single game for them.
This season, the 49ers are just 4-4 but only half a game back of the division lead. Ex-All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga remains out with a wrist injury, so the familiar Gipson may be a candidate for elevation to San Francisco’s active roster before long.
