Aldon Smith was convicted of charges stemming from his domestic violence on Monday, but the former NFL linebacker will be able to avoid spending more time in jail if he can keep himself out of trouble.
Smith was facing charges of domestic violence, assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, false imprisonment and vandalism stemming from an incident back in March in which he assaulted his then-fiancee. According to TMZ, he reached an agreement with prosecutors in which he pled no contest to violating a court order and false imprisonment. In exchange, Smith was sentenced to 90 days in county jail and got credit for time served from the days he already spent in jail and in an alcohol treatment program.
Smith will now be on probation for three years in addition to having to attend domestic violence counseling for a year. He’ll also have to complete 25 hours of community service.
After she reported that Smith assaulted her earlier in the year, Smith’s ex-fiancee expressed concern for the former first-round pick and said she hopes he receives the treatment he needs for his addiction. Smith was arrested multiple times after that, including once when his blood alcohol content was at an extremely dangerous level.
Smith, the No. 7 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, played for the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders. The sky was the limit for him from a talent standpoint, but he has been in trouble with the law numerous times and struggled with alcohol addiction.
