Bills might be in need of backup QB weeks after trading Matt Cassel

Matt Cassel Bills

The Buffalo Bills are in need of depth at quarterback, which is ironic when considering they traded a veteran backup less than a month ago in exchange for a late-round draft pick.

On Tuesday, the Bills announced that they have signed quarterback Josh Johnson. The move creates some concern over whether Tyrod Taylor, who is battling an ankle injury, will have to miss Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. To make matters more interesting, Bills coach Rex Ryan said Monday that Taylor has not been fully healthy all season.

“He is beat up right now. He is sore. We knew he would be,” Ryan said, per Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. “He hasn’t been 100 percent all season. Had ankle injury.”

With that in mind, you have to wonder why the Bills dealt Matt Cassel to the Dallas Cowboys for a fifth-round pick several weeks ago. Cassel is hardly a stud, but he’s an experienced backup who is carrying a salary cap hit of around $1.7 million this season. Plus, he would probably give Buffalo a better chance to win than E.J. Manuel, who would start Sunday if Taylor is unable to go.

The Cowboys have already hinted at their plans for Cassel going forward. If Taylor misses any time, Ryan might end up regretting the trade.
