Brian Callahan demotes himself amid rough start to the season

Brian Callahan has decided to remove one of his hats amid his team’s 0-3 start.

The Tennessee Titans head coach Callahan revealed to reporters on Tuesday that he is giving up playcalling duties for the team. Callahan will now let Titans quarterbacks coach Bo Hardegree handle the playcalling instead.

“A lot of things you self-reflect on with the start that we’ve had so far, and things we have to get better at, and one of the things that I think will help our football team, help me be a better head coach for our team, is I am going to hand over the play-calling to Bo,” Callahan said, per the team’s official site. “Bo has had some experience calling [plays], he’s been with a rookie quarterback before, and that part will make it a little bit seamless in that regard.

“The other part of it is our offensive staff, and our game-planning process and system, is going to remain in place,” added Callahan. “It is still [a] collaborative process, and we rely on everybody to do their part.”

The decision by Callahan comes after the Titans got blown out 41-20 by the division rival Indianapolis Colts in Week 3 to fall to 0-3 on the year. With Callahan calling the plays over the first three games for rookie quarterback Cam Ward, Tennessee has ranked 31st in total offense, averaging a mere 222.3 yards per game. That also includes the NFL’s single worst passing offense at a miserable 133.7 passing yards per game.

As a result, Callahan, who went 3-14 as Titans head coach last season, has managed to set one of the most hideous marks in NFL history. Callahan has also snapped at reporters who have questioned his playcalling this season, but now it looks like he agrees that the Titans’ playcalling duties are better off being handled by someone else.
