The New York Jets are conducting an extensive search for their new head coach, but at least one candidate has taken his name out of the running.
Brian Griese declined an opportunity to interview with the Jets, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.
Griese, 49, is currently the quarterbacks coach with the San Francisco 49ers. He was an NFL quarterback for 11 seasons from 1998-2008. He was drafted in the third round by the Denver Broncos in 1998 and won a Super Bowl as a backup to John Elway. Griese became Denver’s starting quarterback after Elway retired and made the Pro Bowl in 2000.

After spending his first five seasons with the Broncos, Griese played for the Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Chicago Bears. He was mostly a backup throughout his career.
Griese does not have extensive coaching experience. He has only been the quarterbacks coach of the 49ers since 2022, but he has helped develop seventh-round pick Brock Purdy into one of the top QBs in the NFL.
The Jets seem to have lost their top choice to another team, but they are leaving no stone unturned. Griese could become a head coach candidate down the road, though he probably needs more experience to draw widespread interest.
