Buccaneers are upset with Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield’s public unhappiness with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers may not be doing him any favors in terms of his relationship with the organization.

In an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” Friday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggested there are bad feelings that are growing between Mayfield and the Buccaneers organization. The Buccaneers are not pleased with Mayfield’s comments about the organization, and there is something of an adversarial relationship growing between them.

“It almost feels like it’s Baker vs. the team,” Schefter said. “Baker’s not happy with them. They’re not happy with the way he spoke about the organization.”

Mayfield said on Thursday that he felt “disrespected” by the contract offers the Buccaneers made him as he enters the final season of his current deal. He also indicated that the Buccaneers did not offer him more than a two-year deal and seemed to feel that the organization did not show much confidence in him in doing so.

While an angry Mayfield may actually help the Buccaneers performance-wise, it makes sense that the organization would have preferred that he not put them on blast publicly. On the other hand, Mayfield runs on disrespect, and if he felt like the Buccaneers were lowballing him, he was always going to say so.

Mayfield has already said he will not negotiate after the start of training camp, so he appears destined to play out the final year of his deal as things stand. His future beyond that is increasingly uncertain.
