Carson Wentz traded to Commanders from Colts
The Washington Commanders have been openly searching for an upgrade at quarterback this offseason, and they believe Carson Wentz can fill that need.
Washington has traded a package of draft picks to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for Wentz, ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported. Here are the full terms of the deal:
Trade terms, per sources…
Colts get:
2022 third-round pick
2023 third-round pick that can become a second if Carson Wentz plays 70 percent of plays.
2022 second-round pickCommanders get:
QB Carson Wentz
2022 second-round pick.— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) March 9, 2022
Wentz clearly was not the Commanders’ first choice, but he was the best they could do. There were reports that they made a strong push to acquire for Russell Wilson, who was traded to the Denver Broncos on Tuesday. They also likely inquired about Aaron Rodgers, Derek Carr and any other starting QB they thought might have been available.
Wentz, 29, threw for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions in his disappointing lone season in Indianapolis. The Colts had a real chance to make the playoffs but collapsed down the stretch. Wentz played poorly in the biggest moments, which has been a problem for him throughout his career. That tendency has also led to some ruthless Twitter memes.
It seems like Washington gave up a lot for a player like Wentz, but that’s what happens when you’re desperate. All eyes will be on the NFC East when the Commanders take on the Philadelphia Eagles next season.
