Big change announced for ‘Monday Night Football’ TV schedule

A major change has been announced to the “Monday Night Football” broadcast schedule, and it is one that should be welcome news for cord-cutting NFL fans.

ABC announced on Monday that the network will carry an NFL game during every week of the 2023 season. ABC parent company Walt Disney, which also owns ESPN, decided on the change in order to help offset some of the impact the ongoing Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild strikes have had on programming.

As Pro Football Talk notes, Disney’s initial plan was to have select games this season air on ABC, with the rest exclusively on ESPN. Three of those ABC games would have come when “Monday Night Football” has a double-header, as is this case in Week 2. Now, fans will be able to watch “Monday Night Football” on ABC all season, which means the game can even be accessed by those with a good antenna and not require any type of premium cable or streaming subscription.

As of now, the major scheduling change is considered a temporary solution to the programming issues caused by the Hollywood strikes. The plan is for “Monday Night Football” to return to ESPN next season, with a select few games being aired on ABC.
