Clint Frazier asked Yankees if he could wear Mickey Mantle’s number?

New York Yankees prospect Clint Frazier has yet to make a name for himself in the big leagues, but it sure seems like the 22-year-old is bursting with confidence. Otherwise, we highly doubt he would have the courage to ask the organization if he could wear the same jersey number as one of the greatest players in baseball history.

Yankees radio broadcaster Suzyn Waldman told WFAN’s Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts on Wednesday that Frazier asked the team if he could wear No. 7, which was worn by the legendary Mickey Mantle and was retired in 1969. More specifically, Waldman said Frazier asked the Yankees “if they ever un-retire numbers,” according to Deadspin.

Keep dreaming, kid.

Frazier has a better shot of getting his old crazy hairstyle back than he does of being given permission to wear Mantle’s number. The fact that he even asked was probably enough to ruffle some feathers within the organization.

The No. 5 overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft, Frazier was traded to the Yankees from the Cleveland Indians as part of a deal for stud reliever Andrew Miller last season. He better live up to all the hype and then some if he wants to ask the team about un-retiring numbers.
