Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase defended quarterback Ryan Tannehill a day after the team’s postseason aspirations came to a close.
The Dolphins lost at home to the Jacksonville Jaguars 17-7 on Sunday, with Tannehill’s pick-six essentially sealing the loss, which eliminated them from the postseason. Gase said after the game that he wished Tannehill “would have played a little better.”
A day later, Gase defended Tannehill.
“We just haven’t found any consistency in the entire offense,” Gase said via the Bristol Herald Courier. “Everybody is always going to blame the quarterback. We just need everybody doing their job, then you can really evaluate the quarterback. We haven’t had the consistency we need on offense to look at what Ryan really is. Nobody helps him, then he starts to try to do more than he should, and that hurts him.”
What happens with Tannehill is a major question for the offseason. The Dolphins reportedly are uncertain about whether they will bring him back. Though he has not taken the team to the next level, he has provided a steady option when healthy. But he hasn’t been healthy very often, which is a factor they’re taking into concern.
