Doug Marrone: Leonard Fournette must earn starting role

The Jacksonville Jaguars have placed high expectations on rookie running back Leonard Fournette, but that doesn’t mean he can walk in and be guaranteed the starting job.

Jaguars coach Doug Marrone made clear that Fournette, the No. 4 overall pick in April’s NFL Draft, will be tasked with earning the lead back role.

“Obviously when we made the pick we were thinking about [how] he can be someone like that,” Marrone said Saturday, via ESPN’s Michael DiRocco. “Obviously he’s shown that ability, but at the same sense, when you have the team, the one thing about a team is you have to earn that. So he’s going to have to go and show that he has to do that.”

Fournette earning the job is probably going to happen sooner rather than later when you consider how highly the team thinks of him. Ultimately, everyone involved knows that he has to demonstrate some aptitude for the role at this level first.
