Report: EJ Gaines dealing with only a knee sprain

Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns appeared to take a big hit at the cornerback position on Sunday when E.J. Gaines was carted off with a lower leg injury, but an MRI revealed good news.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Gaines suffered only a sprain and not a major knee injury. He is expected to miss three weeks, which means he could still be cleared in time for Week 1.

The Browns are expected to go with rookie Denzel Ward and Terrance Mitchell as their top two corners to start the year, but Gaines gives them nice depth at an important position. Gaines, a former sixth-round pick, was traded to the Buffalo Bills last year as part of the Sammy Watkins deal. He made 11 starts and had an interception and three forced fumbles. Obviously, the Browns are pleased with the MRI results.
