The New York Jets may soon be having a reunion of sorts.
New York has completed five total interviews for their vacant offensive coordinator position, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Wednesday. Those five interviewees are Darrell Bevell, Ronald Curry, Frank Reich, Greg Roman, and Lunda Wells.
Schefter adds that one of those names has been handicapped by some league sources as the favorite — the former NFL head coach Reich.
Currently a senior advisor at Stanford University, Reich, 64, has perhaps the most experience of all the above-mentioned candidates. He was a head coach in the NFL for six total seasons (between the Indianapolis Colts and the Carolina Panthers) and also previously served as an offensive coordinator for both the Philadelphia Eagles (helping them win Super Bowl LII during the 2017 season) and the then-San Diego Chargers.
Reich, who has been coaching in the NFL since the mid-2000s, also has a pre-existing link to the Jets franchise. He briefly suited up for them during his playing career as a quarterback, making seven total starts for the Jets during the 1996 season.
These days, the Jets are looking for a new offensive coordinator after their decision earlier this week to fire Tanner Engstrand, who oversaw the league’s fourth-worst offense this season by total yards per game. Now it appears that Reich, who was linked to another OC job in the NFL a couple of years ago, could end up as Engstrand’s successor.
